Places of worship

Église Saint-François-Xavier (Saint-François)

The first church, called the red church, was built in 1850 and celebrated masses until it was destroyed by fire in 1886. On August 23rd, 1886, the frame of the new church is up. This new church, called the white church this time, was more spacious and was built in the location of the actual Club d’Âge d’Or. On May 10th, 1920, the same tragedy occurs: a fire caused by a thunderstorm burns down the church, again. The church we see today in the Saint-François District was built and opened to the parishioners on January 1st, 1929.

Église Notre-Dame du Rosaire (Connors)

Father Israel Norbert Dumont commissioned the construction of the modern church in 1893. Unfortunately, the church was completely destroyed by fire. A chapel is installed in the Salle des dames de l’Institut féminin, on the second floor of a barn belonging to Mr. Bob Connors. A new church was built in May 1961 on the hill facing the cemetery and the construction took six months. The Église Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire is still, to this day, the church of Connors’ parishioners.

Église Saint-François d’Assise (Clair)

The Église Saint-François d’Assise was built in 1961 on the Main Street in Clair. It sits along the Saint John River and is built on the site of the first church of Clair (built from 1887 to 1888), which was destroyed by fire. The architecture is modern with a square bell tower and steeply-pitched gables. These modern characteristics represent the religion’s evolution over the last century. Magnificent coloured stain-glass windows accentuate the beauty of this church and contribute to the distinctive features of the Église Saint-François d'Assise.

"Église Saint-Coeur-de-Marie" (Baker-Brook)

In 1918, Monsignor Thomas Berry authorized the construction of the church after persistant demands from the parishioners. In 1920, Father Zoël Lambert built the base, which is the foundation of the actual church. In 1926, the sacristy of Baker-Brook is built. Later in 1926, the construction of the actual church begins. The first mass to be celebrated was on August 29th, 1927.

Église de Saint-Hilaire

The Saint-Hilaire parish was fonded in 1869, after being part of the Sainte-Luce parish from across the river (now Frenchville, Maine). The parishioners had to go to church by canoe, the passage being risky sometimes. In 1842, the Ashburton-Webster Treaty that separates Madawaska in two makes the construction of the church in Saint-Hilaire imminent. The first church was built where the cemetery is located and welcomed the parishioners of Baker-Brook, Saint-Hilaire and Verret. The construction was finished in 1895. The actual church was built in 1926 and the first one was demolished the same year.
