Haut-Madawaska has benefited from the services of physicians in private practice for many years. At the end of the 70s, a first medical clinic was created thanks to the collaboration of all the municipalities of Haut-Madawaska. Located inside the Clair municipal building, this initiative helped us recruit two young doctors. In addition, a collaboration was established with the Edmundston Regional Hospital for the provision of ambulatory care and the deployment of nursing staff. In 2006, in collaboration with the Regional Health Authority, a nurse was added to the staff. In 2012, Vitalité Health Network hired a nurse practitioner who works in collaboration with one of the doctors. Vitalité Health Network also added a part-time administrative assistant to support the team.
In 2005, the municipality recognized that the facilities no longer met the needs of the medical clinic. In 2016, the project for a 6,500 sq. ft. annex to the Community Health Centre was announced with the main objective of attracting young doctors and providing other health services to the population of Haut-Madawaska. The cost of construction will be $2.0 million, of which $800,000 will be paid by the municipality of Clair, $500,000 by the province and $700,000 will be raised through fundraising in the community.
In 2019, an advisory committee was created to work in collaboration with the Vitalité Health Network to identify priority primary health care services for Haut-Madawaska and to participate in the recruitment of health care professionals. The members of the advisory committee represent all the Wards of the municipality as well as the village of Lac Baker.
Since the opening of the annex in 2018, two out of four doctors have retired. A nurse practitioner, a full-time nurse, a part-time nursing assistant, a diabetic nurse and two administrative supports have been added.
